“DON’T!” shouted his coworkers. They warned him not to get too close. In its current condition, the snake might feel threatened and react aggressively. They needed a safer, smarter approach.

The group quickly agreed that calling a local animal veterinarian was their best option. After a tense phone call, the worker who had spoken with the vet turned around, visibly shaken.

The vet believed the snake might be pregnant—and could be preparing to lay her eggs right there, on the fresh pavement. To verify this, she gave the workers a risky assignment.

She asked them to locate the bulge along the snake’s body. But to do that, they’d need to gently stretch out the animal—an incredibly dangerous task for anyone, let alone a group of untrained workers. The men hesitated. He volunteered to take the lead, to keep the others safe. Inspired by his courage, two more workers joined in. Their job: grab the snake’s tail and slowly pull it to determine where the bulge was. Thankfully, luck seemed to be on their side.

The snake’s head was far from its tail—too far, in fact, for it to easily strike at them. And it had been sluggish up to this point. Still, the workers didn’t want to take any chances.

The two men suited up with the toughest gear they had—improvised armor to shield themselves from a potential bite. The brave worker who had volunteered first stood ready nearby, prepared to draw the snake’s attention if needed. With hearts pounding and breath held, the two men gripped the anaconda’s tail.
