Drone Captures Something Nobody Was Supposed To See

Just when Jonathan was on the verge of giving up, the screen flickered back to life. “Yes!” he exclaimed, his voice tinged with disbelief, as the drone’s camera feed cut through the static. The aircraft was careening erratically over the forest, a far cry from the cliffs.

With urgency, Jonathan gripped the controls, carefully guiding the drone back toward the coast as rain pelted the lens, blurring the view into a smeared, shifting mess. His heart raced with relief. Somehow, he hadn’t obliterated the expensive drone in his earlier panic. Not yet, at least.
As the lighthouse slowly came back into view, Jonathan exhaled deeply, realizing he had been holding his breath. But as the drone descended lower, its camera panned over something partially concealed by the trees. Jonathan froze. There was something strange about it—something that sent a chill creeping down his spine. An unsettling feeling settled in the pit of his stomach.

He zoomed in, trying to get a clearer view, but the camera struggled to focus through the rain and the growing darkness. Squinting, Jonathan caught a fleeting, disorienting glimpse of the object. In that brief moment, his heart skipped a beat. The image hung in his mind, haunting him, though the details were still fuzzy. Had he really seen what he thought he saw?
Jonathan slowed the drone, his eyes narrowing as the camera focused on a bright object half-hidden in the weeds. Was it really what he thought it was? Alarm bells began ringing in his head. He bit his lip, leaning in closer, peering intently through the rain-streaked lens.

The drone’s camera adjusted, zooming in to bring the object into sharper view. Jonathan leaned forward, squinting at the monitor, his heart racing. He carefully manipulated the controls, and the camera shifted downward, revealing a small, bright orange object nestled among the tangled branches. “What the…” Jonathan muttered under his breath, unable to shake the unsettling feeling creeping up his spine.

This made no sense. Jonathan had been flying his new drone over the coastline, aiming to capture footage of the storm surge and the wild waves. Somehow, the winds must have carried it inland. But what was something like this doing in the middle of these remote woods?

He zoomed in further. It was a child’s backpack. The bright orange pattern stood out against the muted browns and greens of the underbrush. One of the side pockets was unzipped, and he could just make out the corner of what looked like a notebook—or maybe some drawings—peeking out. His heartbeat quickened. A strange, uneasy feeling settled in the pit of his stomach. What was going on here?
