87 year old woman lost life savings to scammer—but she wouldn’t let them get away.

“I thought I was helping you, Danny. I did exactly what they told me because I believed you were in trouble.” Marie sobbed, her whole body trembling under the weight of what she’d done.
Danny’s eyes widened, shifting from confusion to a storm of shock and anger as he grasped the situation. His jaw clenched tightly, hands curling into fists as he fought to control the rage rising inside him.
“Grandma,” he said firmly, “you’ve been scammed. That wasn’t me. They used some kind of trick—a voice recording, or maybe even AI—to mimic my voice.”
He knelt beside her, gently taking her shaking hands in his. “I’m so sorry this happened to you.”
Marie let out a small sob, shaking her head in disbelief. “I should’ve known. I should’ve realized something was wrong… It just didn’t feel right, but I was so scared,” she whispered, her voice breaking under the weight of her emotions.
Her eyes searched Danny’s, looking for reassurance. “I only wanted to help you.”
Danny wrapped his arms around her tightly as she wept into his shoulder. “It’s not your fault, Grandma. These people are professionals. They know exactly how to manipulate good-hearted people like you,” he said softly, his own eyes darkening with anger. “They took advantage of your love for me. I’m not going to let them get away with it.”
Marie clung to him, fingers digging into his back, her sobs muffled against his shirt. “I’ve lost so much, Danny,” she whispered. “All my savings… It’s all gone.”
Danny pulled back slightly, meeting her tear-streaked gaze. “There has to be a way to get it back, Grandma. We’ll figure something out.”
Determined, Danny nodded, his mind racing. The first step was to contact the police. He dialed the local precinct, explaining the situation as calmly as he could, though fury seeped through his voice.
The officer on the other end listened carefully, noting the details of the call Marie had received, the voice imitation, and the bank transfer. “I understand this is incredibly distressing, sir,” the officer said. “We’ll file a report and forward it to our fraud division. Someone will be in touch soon.”
